Results of a 3-Day Juice Fast

When I set out to do my first 3-day juice fast, I never imagined what would happen. I’d been struggling with my weight since my first year of high school. I had chronic eczema around my nose and mouth. I was constantly yo-yo dieting, and I felt trapped.

I’d adopted my mother’s mindset that being slim and healthy was something you had to continuously work toward. She was always on a diet and never got down to the weight she wanted, except through food restriction. I remember when I was a child, she came home from a trip after a month of being away on retreat, and she was slim and beautiful. She told me that she had only eaten a few meals the whole time she was gone; that really stuck in my 9 year-old mind.

All through high school, I skipped meals to stay thin. The two most common emotions I had around food were deprivation and regret. Even though I looked like I had it all together to my friends and family, I was struggling. By the time I was a young mother with two small children, I’d had it with feeling so confused about food.

I remember the night I realized something had to change, I was washing the dishes after dinner when I noticed a watercolor postcard I had tucked in the corner of the window over my sink. It read:

“Only as high as I reach can I grow,

Only as far as I seek can I go,

Only as deep as I look can I see,

Only as much as I dream can I be.”

I’d read that card countless times, but in that moment I suddenly realized, I had to think bigger. I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life trying to lose weight and dieting. I wanted to live more fully. I wanted to be the me I knew I could be. While I had always thought all I wanted was a way to lose a few pounds and clear up my skin, what I needed was to transform my health and that’s what detoxing did for me.

Once I birthed the desire to live more fully, things began to come to me; books like: Harvey and Marilyn Diamond’s Fit for Life, John Robbin’s Diet for a New America, and Norman Walker’s Raw Vegetable Juices, Colon Health, and Become Younger. This was the beginning of decades of learning about healing the body naturally, and how to eat for optimum health.

I started with my first 3-day juice fast (which you can download here). Because I’d had such a terrible relationship with food, I wondered if I was doing the right thing. Not to mention, I felt awful. I had a headache for two days and I felt exhausted and deprived. I knew after all my reading, that I was drinking more nourishment than I’d ever consumed before, so I persevered. I kept telling myself it was only 3 days; I could get through it, and I did. At the end of the 3 days, I felt lighter, clearer, my belly was flatter and my pants were looser, but I knew I couldn’t juice fast for the rest of my life. I wanted to learn how to eat in a way that was healthy and more sustainable.

I went to Hippocrates Health Institute in West Palm Beach, FL, and discovered the living foods diet. In a matter of a few days of eating this way, my skin cleared up and I lost the weight I wanted to lose. More importantly, I realized that what I put in my mouth had the power to make me feel more alive. It was there that I witnessed other people’s miraculous healings firsthand. I met a man who had gotten the “Go home and get your affairs in order” speech from his team of doctors. He arrived in a wheelchair, looking like he had one foot in the grave. In the matter of a few days he was strolling across campus with a vibrant glow and a smile on his face.

Seeing his miraculous recovery set me on a path – I wanted to share what I’d discovered with the world. I opened my first juice bar in 1999 and started sharing healthy food with anyone who was interested. And that’s what I’ve been doing ever since.

I live by example. I eat whatever I want, whenever I want it. I have a healthy relationship with food. I don’t always eat only the things that are good for me and that’s ok. The wonderful thing is that I’m mostly attracted to food that nourishes my body and feeds my soul. I enjoy food, and it’s not my primary struggle anymore.

That’s what detox did for me; It set me on a path of life transformation.
